Travel & Logistics

We’re so excited to see you in Oaxaca! As part of your travel planning, we recommend that you purchase travel insurance that covers the total cost of your trip. We also suggest purchasing refundable fights or flight protection.

Arrival in Oaxaca

Be sure to set your clocks—in Oaxaca, you’re on Central Standard Time, which is +2 hours ahead of Pacific Standard Time, -5 hours behind GMT / UTC.

Trip Start

Our adventure begins at 10am on Tuesday, December 14, 2021, at El Callejón Hotel in Oaxaca, Mexico.

Arrival Airport

The best airport to fly into is Oaxaca's Xoxocotlán International Airport (OAX), which is approximately 25 minutes by car or taxi from our hotel. There are direct flights to OAX from Mexico City (60min), Los Angeles LAX (4hrs 15min), Dallas-Fort Worth DFW (3 hrs) and Houston IAH (2 hrs 50min).

We recommend arriving at least one full day prior to the start of your trip in the case of unforeseen circumstances or travel delays. For recommendations on where to stay the night before, see the following Pre-Arrival Accommodations section.

Transfer from Airport

We recommend booking a taxi directly through the El Callejon hotel (see Trip Overview) no more than 30 days ahead of your arrival.

Alternatively, you can organize your own taxi upon arrival at OAX airport at the ‘Transportes’ desk located after baggage claim. The process is straightforward and hassle-free: You prepay for a collectivo (minibus) that’s either shared (around 150 pesos per person) or private (350 pesos per person). They'll give you a receipt and then you walk outside, where you’ll be directed into a vehicle. Oaxaca’s city center is about a 25-minute ride from the airport.

Pre-Arrival Accommodations

We stay in small boutique hotels on this trip—rooms go fast and daily rates change frequently. If you plan to arrive in Oaxaca prior to the beginning of our journey, we recommend staying at the El Callejon Hotel (see Trip Overview). Please contact the hotel directly to book. Let them know you will be on a trip with Modern Adventure, and would like to extend your stay prior to the trip start. We will try to ensure you stay in the same room from start to finish—however, please note that this is not always an option and rooms are subject to change.

If El Callejon is booked, we also recommend:

  • Casona de Tita, a small and stylish boutique hotel with a lovely interior courtyard. Tel: +52 951 516 1400

  • Los Amantes Boutique Hotel, in the heart of the city with rooftop views. Tel. +52 951 514 8899

Departure from Teitipac

Trip End

Our trip ends—after seven days of unforgettable culinary and cultural exploration—in the small village of Teitipac on Monday, December 20, 2021.

Departure Airport

The closest airport is Oaxaca International Airport (OAX), about a one-hour drive from the hacienda.

Transfer to Airport

After breakfast on our last day, Modern Adventure will provide a complimentary transfer to Oaxaca’s OAX airport. If you would like to join this transfer, your flight home should depart OAX at 1pm or later.

Please note: If you book a flight that leaves earlier than 1pm, or if you are planning on extending your time in Oaxaca, it is your responsibility to arrange alternative transportation from Teitipac to the airport. If you are departing on the last day but earlier or later than the transfer, you will need to let your trip leader know on Day 1 of your trip to arrange your taxi. If your plans are to extend the hotel can arrange transport for you.

Please note that because taxis are hard to come by in rural, remote Teitipac, we recommend joining the Modern Adventure group transfer to the OAX airport if at all possible.

Post-Trip Accommodations

We hope you have the opportunity to extend your stay in Oaxaca. If so, we recommend staying at El Callejon or the Ex Hacienda (see Trip Overview). Please note that any post-trip accommodation is your responsibility to book. Make reservations by contacting the hotels directly.

If either hotel is booked, see our alternate hotels in the adjacent Pre-Arrival Accommodations section.
